Eleven

Alexa lay on her back, staring up at the ceiling in the darkness. For the first time in nearly a week she chose not to sleep at the hospital, but in her own bed. Felicity snored softly beside her, and the added warmth of her slight form in the stuffy room made sleep impossible.

Why hadn’t it been hard to sleep beside Caleb?

Avoiding him the past several days had been easy, she simply sent Grammy to check on him each morning, and Felicity took down his dinner and spent time reading or playing checkers with him each evening.

Avoiding thinking about him, however, was far more difficult. Every time she closed her eyes, he was there. The memory of his kisses beneath the willow tree were nothing compared to the memory of his tongue circling her nipple.

A moan escaped her as heat flared into her belly and spread lower, leaving an uncomfortable ache between her legs.

Lovemaking had never felt like that with Percival.

Beside her, Felicity sat up and considered her with sleepy eyes.

Much to her surprise, the girl suddenly embraced her. “You’re home!”

She laughed and returned the hug. “I’ve been here; you were just asleep at the time.”

“I missed you, Alexa. I love Grammy, and Uncle Edwin is wonderful, but when you’re here, I feel like I have the big sister I always wanted.”

Alexa swallowed. Guilt stabbed at her. She hadn’t considered Felicity’s need for female companionship. The poor girl hadn’t asked to spend her summer caring for wounded men.

“I’m sorry. I’ve been occupied elsewhere.”

“Is that why you haven’t been down to visit Caleb?” Felicity climbed from the bed and hurried across the room to where her dress hung on a door. She took a folded piece of writing paper from the pocket and offered it to Alexa. “He said to give you this.”

Alexa unfolded the paper and glanced at the contents.

…slipped the bonds of this earth to gaze upon the face of his Creator…

She frowned. It was the letter he’d promised to help her write.

“We’ve written a lot of letters this week. To his family, to his fiancée, his friend.” Alexa continued to stare at the words on the page.

...though he died not on the battlefield, but in battle for his life, his sacrifice is no less honorable…

She could never have come up with anything so eloquent, yet it somehow seemed typical of Caleb to take ordinary words and make them anything but.

At the bottom was a note she assumed was for her.

If you won’t come to me, I’ll come to you.

Alarm skittered through her, and she turned to Felicity. “When did he give you this?”

“The day before yesterday. I think he’s really sorry about whatever you two quarreled over.”

“He said we argued?”

Felicity crawled onto the bed and curled her legs beneath her. “He said you had a misunderstanding.” She flopped onto the pillows, a dreamy expression on her face. “What did he do? I’ll bet he tried to steal a kiss, didn’t he? He’s so handsome. Don’t you think he’s handsome, Alexa?”

She glanced back down at the letter.
